This story

On 4 April 2012 an experiment in CERN, Geneva, goes wonderfully right and horribly wrong. The wonderful thing is that a black hole is created. Scientists have been hoping for this for years. The horrible part is that, instead of evaporating by Hawking radiation (as theory predicted) it is persistent.

The hole begins to burn its way through the huge ATLAS detector, there is an explosion and eight people are trapped underground. Their only way of escape is through the ATLAS cavern itself. As they enter the cavern the hole emerges from ATLAS and two people are sucked in.

Author

This web site records an author’s work as he develops and writes a series of novels known collectively as Time Crystal.  Wyken Seagrave (real name Phil Brown) began work on the novel in 2002 and this blog was created late in 2006, so it’s not a complete record.

Why publish this stuff? Mainly because the author wants feedback from readers, especially young people aged 14 to 18. He absolutely needs to know how these readers feel about the story at this relatively early stage. Okay, so four years into a project might not seem early to you, but this guy thinks on a BIG scale.

Also his diary might be useful for other budding authors, for literature students and their teachers to explore the writing process.

There is an educational agenda underlying this whole project involving the use of fiction to engage and inspire people with science and history, and this blog might also explore the philosophy and practice of this agenda.

Also because writing is a hell of a lonely occupation. The poor sap works 18 hours a day on this project 365 days a year. He needs some human communication to keep him sane. Now I know what you’re thinking, and, you’re right. He can’t be sane if he devotes so much of his life to this project. But just think what he would be like without your feedback!

So read the sample chapters published here and let him know what you think.
